"커피가 진정 우리의 삶을 풍요롭게 할 수 있을까?"라는 질문과 함께 2002년 서울 신림동에서 시작한 나무사이로는 여전히 그 답을 찾기 위해 애쓰며 지냅니다. 우리는 커피와, 커피를 연유로 만난 사람들이 좋아서 함께 일하고 서로 도우며 살아갑니다. 그러는사이 나무사이로라는 이름앞에 종종 ‘스페셜티 커피 전문 카페’, ‘부티크 카페’ 같은 꼬리표도 붙었습니다.

우리가 하는 일이 무엇인지, 함께 일하는 이들이 누구인지 알고자 우리는 틈틈이 산지에 방문했습니다. 그리고 한평생 농사를 지어온 농부들의 삶 앞에서, 거대한 커피산업 안에서 우리가 아주 작은 존재임을 알았습니다. 우리는 이것이 우리의 역할임을 잊지 않기로 했습니다.

그래서 나무사이로에게 ‘스페셜티' 라는 말은 ‘작고, 느리며, 독립적인, 지속가능한, 변방의’와 같은 말들과 가까워 보입니다. 우리에게 스페셜티 커피는 ‘특별한’ 커피가 아니라 ‘기본에 충실함'으로써 ‘더 나은 삶을 향한' 커피입니다.

What does specialty coffee mean to Namusairo? Namusairo Coffee was founded in 2002 in Shilim-dong, Seoul with this question, "Can coffee truly enrich our life?" and we are still trying to find an answer. We just love coffee very much and love to associate and work with others who also have great passion for it. During the last few years, somehow, some people began to label us as a "specialty coffee cafe" or a "boutique cafe."

In the meantime, we started to visit origins in order to understand more about our work and farmers who produce the coffees we deal with every day. And we realized that we are just a tiny being in the vast coffee industry. We decided not to forget this no matter what and to stick to our role even if it is very small.

To Namusairo, specialty coffee means small, slow, independent, sustainable and peripheral. For us, specialty coffee is not really "special" but something that values basics and can help us - everyone in the coffee industry - have a better life.
